IPMA Level D

IPMA® Level D: Project Management Associate is an internationally recognised qualification offered by APM.

Previously aligned to the APM Project Management Qualification (PMQ), the IPMA Level D: Project Management Associate qualification is designed for people looking to progress in their project management career.

What is the process?

Stage One


Firstly, you will need to submit your completed application form and self-assessment form.

Stage Two


In stage two you will need to complete a one-hour exam answering multiple choice questions covering 50% of the syllabus through 60 questions and a two-hour examination via 14 short written answers, with 12 having to be answered.

  • You can also self-study for this qualification through APM directly by applying for an open examination.
  • The application process begins with reviewing the candidate guidance notes. You can then apply for an open examination directly through APM.

This apprenticeship is designed to provide the knowledge and build the practical skills and behaviours required for a project manager to successfully manage the initiation, planning, execution and control of projects.

Re-certification


You have six months to re-certify after your certification has expired.  Certification lasts five years.

This can be done directly via APM through evidencing a minimum of 35 hours of CPD per year (since the last certification or re-certification).

Examination regulations

The following rules on conduct apply to students sitting IPMA examinations:

  • You need to arrive at the examination venue 30 minutes prior to the examination start time. Late arrivals will not be permitted entry into the examination room
  • Provide photo evidence of your identity
  • You are required to comply in all respects with any instructions issued by the exam invigilator/s before and during an exam.
  • You are required to comply with the ruling of the invigilator/s. They are obliged to report any cases of irregularity or improper conduct to the APM. They are also empowered to discontinue your exam if you are suspected of misconduct and to exclude you from the exam room.
  • You are not permitted to bring any written or printed material into the examination room; all books, bags, mobile phones, electronic communication devices or any item with smart technology functionality and other items should be left where the invigilator directs.
  • You are not permitted to remove either your answer papers or your question paper from the examination room. All candidate answers and question papers remain the property of APM.
  • Candidates must not talk to, or attempt to communicate with, other candidates during the exam under any circumstances.

What materials required for examinations?

In preparation for taking your examination, you may bring with you:

  • A selection of pens/pencils to write with.
  • A non-pre-programmable pocket calculator* (with prior permission from the APM Qualifications Department).
  • A translation only dictionary* (with prior permission from the APM Qualifications Department).

*Dictionaries and calculators will be checked by the invigilator before the examination commences.

Do you offer open examinations for IPMA Level D?

We only offer online examinations for any of our open examinations. Open examinations are offered on a quarterly basis in February, May, August and November to candidates booking individually. The multiple choice element is held in the morning and the short written answer examination in the afternoon. 

You will need to complete an application form and self assessment form to be accepted onto the examination. These documents need to be sent to ipmaqualifications@apm.org.uk at least 10 working days before the date that you wish to sit the examinations. Once received we will confirm whether the documentation is acceptable, if so we will ask you to call to make payment for the booking.
