APM Greater Bay Area Branch invited Kevin O’Brien (CEO of Gammon Construction Limited) to discuss the topic of “Building Belonging through Allyship” on 8 December 2022.

Kevin kicked off the discussion by walking through his career path in the construction sector. He shared the operational experience of diversity and inclusion. When Kevin moved to Gammon, he helped Gammon to establish the Diversity and Inclusion Council (D&I). This Council is responsible for project “D&I sustainability” which has four-stages in planning:

  1. Construct the foundation for action
  2. Building the infrastructure
  3. Gain momentum & deeper integration
  4. Best in class/ leading Edges

This four-stage plan targets to deliver benefits in five aspects:

  1. Compliance
  2. Discovery
  3. Committed
  4. Championed, and
  5. Innovation

In the discussion, Kevin shared his views and inspirations on being a male ally. He highlighted the following key points for audiences’ understanding on allyship:-

  • What is an ally?
  • Why are they important?
  • What impact can allies have?
  • How to be a good ally; and
  • Do and don’ts of being an ally.

In the Q&A session, audiences raised meaningful questions for the implementation and development of D&I consideration. At the end, it was good to see audiences reflect their takeaway for this webinar.

Here the GBA branch would like to thank Kevin for spending time with us on sharing his professional views on building an inclusive culture in the construction sector. The branch appreciates our committee member SS Wong on the coordination and arrangement for this successful webinar.

For 2022/2023, GBA Branch would continue to invite market professionals and practitioners to deliver different project management and industry related topics through webinars.
